Hi it's November 10 now😅😅😅😅😅😅

It is~! Just a little longer, I'm deploying builds and upload them atm :-)

This game is wonderful I'll wait the next update what date you release the nest update I'm so exited😀😀😀😀😀

(+1)

Hello Mr. hudky! Thank you for playing the game. I still have a few things to improve here and there, but the next public build should arrive around November 10th. Fingers crossed :-)

Thank you for responding

(+1)

yea i think angus is my favorite, his personality just pulls me in.

(+1)

I'm glad to hear it! The upcoming updates will focus on the other two character, but I still hope that you will find them interesting as well.

Ah one more thing ! On Mac I've ran into this problem when I press esc to exit out the settings.

(+1)

Hello again!

This is actually well-known problem for all MacOS games made in RPG Maker engine that wasn't deployed in MacOS environment (I'm using Windows PC). Apparently, a game deployed in this way doesn't have all the internal premissions to be able to write a new file, thus, it doesn't allow you to create a new save/ a file for the game settings.
But no worries, I'm planning to soon release a web-browser version of the game (along with the new upcoming public update), which should (hopefully) solve the problem.

This VN was a wonderful experience. I've been following this game since before the author ported all of the story and assets over to a new engine. Every year I check back in to see what kind of progress has been made and I have never been let down.

One of the pitfalls that a lot of visual novels run in to is that their romance options can be too archetypical and lack depth. This visual novel does NOT suffer from this issue. Rowley, Angus, and Kegar are all delectably written. Their pathos is conveyed simply and elegantly. I trust the story the author is telling. In this cynical, hyper-critical world that is the greatest praise I can give a story.

If I had one piece of constructive criticism for the creator, it would be the suggestion to include small alternative choices in dialog for the protagonist. In many visual novels we are the observer of a character navigating through their own life. In a romantic-oriented visual novel like this it may help with player immersion if they had a few opportunities to decide why Welkin feels the way they do. Perhaps give multiple options of pizzas for Welkin to suggest to Angus, or allow the player to choose which ruins to investigate with Rowley on morning of day 2. Perhaps when Angus asks "Why are you so quiet?" on Day 1, instead of responding "Oh, I was just enjoying the scenery," Welkin could play coy, or not give a response. Opportunities for player expression can only ever help, imho. I trust the author to be able to implement these kinds of options tastefully if they are interested in doing so.

I eagerly await more and will be supporting Tyrving on Patreon so that I can get my fix!

(P.S. I'm team Angus, although Rowley has been growing on me.)

(+1)

Hello Klaus, thank you for your kind words. I'm delighted to hear that you like the whole cast and that you enojoy the way I portrayed them. And yes, while this is a 'slice of life' kind of story, I still wanted it to be an escape from the everyday life - a story that should make the reader feel warm and cozy.

As for the dialogue choices I'm slowly making a shift to introduce these in the character routes. The plan is, that for now, I will write dialogue branches only for the most important decisions that could affect the story/ending of the route (although, I'm not ruling out adding some minor, flavour choices here and there, even in the early part of the script).

Last but not least, THANK YOU SO MUCH for supporting me over Patreon - it means a lot to me, and truth is, that this project couldn't exist without the help of kind people like you. Thank you once more. Please enjoy the game.

(+1)

kinda reminds me of morenatsu

I can't blame you for thinking this way - Morenatsu was indeed one of the main inspirations to make my own game like this ;)

(1 edit) (+1)

omg you repsoned to my text well thx, but the game is rlly nice tho wait ing for update:)

Finished 0.7.0.  Really loved the characters so far. The only issue is Kegar doesn’t look like a lion lol. Really appreciate the option to choose dialogue options and start from the new build feature.

Hey, CR1MSUN. Thank you for sharing your opinion. I'm glad to hear you enjoy the game and I'm happy to know that you find the quick resume feature useful. And don't worry, a lot of readers have an issue with Kegar's appearance, but that's the part of his story.

Does anyone else have issues saving in the Mac version of the game? When I choose the file and select Save, it just gives the same error chime as choosing any of the greyed-out options and no save occurs.

I do, I don't get why

Hey guys. Thank you for getting in touch. This is acutally well-known problem for all MacOS games made in RPG Maker engine that wasn't deployed in MacOS enviroment (I'm using Windows PC). Apparently, a game deployed in this way doesn't have all the internal premissions to be able to write a new file, thus, it doesn't allow you to create a new save.

That's why, for now, the game features a few options to resume the story from a certain points (days), to make it easier to jump in and resume your progress.

I'm also planning to soon release a web-browser version of the game (along with the new upcoming public update), so please give it a try and let me know if it solved the problem.

it doesn't start for me at all

(+1)

Absolutely love this, Kegar is so sweet and likable that I'm stopping myself from moving past the route selection cause I want to do his first. My literal only issue with the entire vn is his art. Kegar is stated to be a lion, but his sprite looks more like a Dr. Seuss monkey. I still absolutely love the guy, but it could be even better.

(+1)

Thank you for playing the game and for your kind words! I'm really happy to hear that you enjoy the game and Kegar's company. The two upcoming public updates (v.0.8.0) and (v.0.9.0) are all tied to his story, so definitely stay tuned! :) (A new release is planned for beginning of November). As for Kegar's design, I know it's kind of polarizing, but that's exactly how it supposed to be - his unusual appearance plays a significant role in his story, and I can only hope I will be able to give it a proper execution in the latter part of the game. Again, thank you for the comment!

I'm having performance issues with the android build, It takes seconds for any of my inputs to be registered. My tablet doesn't have problems with games or other visual novels.

Hey, NPS7, thanks for letting me know about the problem. Could you tell me what device you use? (or the specs).

(1 edit)

Lenovo Tab 4 8", Snapdragon 425, 2 GB RAM.

Yeah it's not great but I've never had performance problems with anything until now.

I see! Thank you for the response.
After Years can be problematic on some devices because it uses a different engine than most of the fVNs out here (it's RPG Maker, rather than RenPy). RPG Maker is known for not-so great optimalization on mobile devices, because this engine heavily relies on a single CPU core performance (long story short, it's more PC friendly). To add the salt to the injury, I also decided to make the game in a high resoution of 1920x1080 px, which can also take a quite a hit on the performance. Sadly, I've realized about it way too late, and now, it would require a massive amount of work to make changes in this regard (scaling every picture that shows up in every scene, relocation all the game menus etc).

So yeah, to summarize - your device is by all means powerful enough to run a simple game like this - the real problem is the engine itself, and my mistake to not code the core script of the game with the mobile platform in mind (I simply wasn't aware how big Android user base is here on itch.io). I just hope that the low framerate won't discourage you from reading the novel - the game doesn't feature any "quick time actions", so you shouldn't experience any more unconviniences along the way.

Hi tyrving, just a question, are you planning to switch from your currently using engine to renpy? Or rather make a renpy version for android

Hey Shu-Chi! As much as I'm aware of how the game would benefit from switching to Renpy in terms of improved gameplay fluidity, I'm afraid it's not enough of a reason to put a months of worktime to move a project in such advanced state to a whole different platform that I have zero knowledge about. Please believe me that, while VNs might not seem to be a difficult games to pull off, making one version of the game is enough of a headache, especially when you work on it alone making all the writing, coding, testing, editing, drawing, managing two sites and preparing a content for promotion and the supporters.

I must ask though, what is the exact reason you would like to see the game on Renpy? Is there a lack of certain feature or is the game having some technical/ performance issues?

Am I dreaming* proceeds to wake up* shieeeeeet

;_;

Have you thought of including a backlog history function, so we can read what has been said by the characters?

The backlog is already available in the desktop version of the game - as for the Android build, I'm still trying to figure out how to add more gestures to make it possible.

OMG I LOVES THE NEW UPDATE!!!!! AHHHHHHHHHHHHH

Hello HarrazZZ, thank you for playing the game - I'm very happy to hear it!

is there no backlog function in android version? :<

Sadly, not yet - I'm still trying to figure out how to add more gestures to the mobile version of the game.

(+1)

Are the other routes available

(+3)

Hello! Angus' route will be available in the upcoming Public build, while Kegar's in the upcoming Patreon build. Both versions are going to be released in only a few days.

(+1)

Thanks for the information

Mr what date you release the version0.8.0

I will be aiming to deliever a new demo by the end of October.

Really like it. I look foward to see more in Angus route and Rowley route. Good work and I can't wait for future updates!

(+1)

Thank you kindly :)

You're welcome! Keep up the good work, man! :)

(+2)

Any news of when an update will becoming out but love the story so far real great

(+3)

Hello, Cloded Leopard. Thank you for playing the game. I'm very happy to hear you enjoy the story. The new public build should be available in about two weeks (maybe a bit earlier), so stay tuned.

(+1)(-1)

(SPOILERS)

Does it forcefully end with only 1 character or am i missing something? Or update...

No, you're not missing anything - the current public build allows you to choose only one of the characters at this point. Update 7 brings Angus's story and update 8 will bring Kegar's story.

(+2)

I love the game so far keep up the amazing work

I'm happy to hear it! Thank you for your kind words.

I’m having problems playing this game on Mac. It keeps repeating The application “game” can’t be opened. What should I do?

Hello! I'm sorry to hear about this issue. I've never used MacOS system myself, so I'm afraid I won't be able to help you with this problem. However, once I release a new demo, I'm planning to host an online version of the game here on itch.io, so it will be possible to play it directly from internet browser. I cross my fingers that this version will allow you to experience the game.

Thank you for your comment, and please stay tuned :)

Question: Will there be a gallery down the line?

Hello MidnightAzure. The CG gallery is currently reserved for Patreon builds only.

(+1)

Why is it that I long for a life like this? A life where I actually have friends... Is it me or... Am I lonely?

ANYWAY! THIS IS SUCH A GREAT GAME! I REALLY WOULD LIKE TO SEE IT GROW BECAUSE IT HAS SUCH A GREAT POTENTIAL!

(+1)

Thank you for your kind words, Ace - I'm delighted to hear that you enjoy the game :)

I'll be patiently waiting for kegars route update because he's currently my favorite! ^^

(+1)

YAYYYY!!!! NEW UPDATE!!!!! THANK YOU SO MUCHHHHHHHH!!!!!

(+1)

Please enjoy the new content! I hope you like it!

Hello! I love this game alot, and hope you continue the amazing work!

Hello. Thank you for your kind words! I'm glad to hear you like the game! I'm still working hard on the new update - I can hardly wait for the this new release as well! :)

(1 edit)

You just got my hopes up! And by the way, if this amazing piece of game play continues to be worked on i might just become a Patreon! I love i quality games such as these where creators like you put your love and effort in the game and the people.

Yes, it's a great feeling to be able express myself in a medium like this. The developing process can be very tedious at the times (especially, when you have to replay the same scene over and over to fix the bugs or get the right "vibe"), but overall, it's a fantastic experience to work on my own game, that features my own characters. Thank you for support!

I hope you will continue the work. Because I personally liked it so much.
(+1)

Hello, Vaangrey! Thank you for playing the game. I'm very happy to hear that you enjoy it.

Could you make skipping faster cause it takes way to long to skip dialogue

At the moment I'm not sure if it's possible, but I'll definitely take a look in the game code and try to crank it up. Which version of the game are you playing btw? (Desktop or Android?)

(+1)

Android version is still broken. (At least for me it is)

(+1)

Hello. I would love to help, but I would need the details about this issue. Could you tell me more about it?

(+1)

Whenever I try to open the game my screen turns back and then there's yellow and white text on the screen that says "TypeError undefined in not a function"

(+1)

Thank you for the reply. There actually is one solution I could try out to implement in the upcoming update - hopefully that will solve the problem.

I wish you good luck with your solution, and thank you for replying also!

Hello again. The new build just got released - I implemented a code that might fix the issue you mention before. Please, let me know if the game now works properly on your end.

When will the next update come out. And l love the game

Hello again! The next public update should arrive in the first half of July - I've got a bit delayed due to some IRL stuff, but I'm working on the game pretty much everyday now to get it done ASAP. Please stay tuned :)

Thanks and keep up the good work 😊

Hi! Due to the fact that I had nothing to do, I made some questions that could be added to the new FAQ:

1. Will the Game be paid or free?

2(?). (if the game is free)Will the gallery be available in the final build of the game?

3. Why was this game made through RPG Maker?

4. Kegar is a lion or monkey?

5. (this question has nothing to do with the game) Will you have any other visual novels besides After Years?

6. Will there be other languages in the game? If so, can I add translation to the game and how do I do it?

Thank you for the list, Walter! I'll work on it soon, and will let you know in another comment when it's ready.

Hi! I have a question:... Can I create a game page (it will only be in Russian) on the FANDOM Wiki? I've just never done anything like this, which is why I'm asking for permission)

Sure thing! Thank you for spreading the word about the game.

Thanks! See also my comment with ideas for the game. Maybe you will like something and add it to the game

(5 edits) (+2)

I have no more questions for this game, it is great, but I have ideas that can improve the game for the better:

1. Could be improved setup of the game. For example, you could add the function: "Skip only visible/all". I would like to ask you to add the function "Enable/disable nswf", I think this is a useful function
2. It would be possible to simplify the management of phones. For example, you can add the "back" button when you go to settings and credits. (When I first played After Years, I didn't know how to exit the settings, and I had to re-enter the game)

3. It would be possible to add buttons next to the dialogues of the characters. For example, you could add a "settings" button and a "return to main menu" button. Also the "skip" and "back" buttons
4. I would like that when Welkin spoke next to his dialogues appeared his sprite

5. For example, you can add a function for selecting the name of the main character
Phew... Well, that's it. I hope I didn't make any errors in the text    (●´⌓`●)

Let me remind you that these are just my ideas! I won't be upset if you refuse to add them to the game

Edit: I forgot something. Can you add information about Welkin on the project page in the Characters section?

I completely agree with your ideas

(1 edit)

Thank you for such in-depth analysis, Walter!

At the moment, Welkin's portrait and a function to disable NSFW are the only two features I could easily implement (but at the cost of story development). At some point, I will ask the patrons about these and let them vote to decide.

As for the other functions like "skip seen" or UI buttons - the engine I use to create the game doesn't support such things by default, and even the community plugins doesn't always works like intended. Sadly, the bigger this project gets, the more I start to regret for not sticking with Ren'Py like everyone else. But becasuse it's too late now to move the project on the new engine, I have to continue with what I have.

And yes, I will probably add Welkin's character profile info at some point too (I will have to draw his sprite first, though).

(1 edit)

Um ... What? This game was made through RPG Maker?! I have two more questions: how and why?

To be honest, I'm in shock after I found out that this game was made through RPG Maker. When did it become possible to make visual novels through RPG Maker?
And why did you even start making a game through RPG Maker?

Edit: And one more question... Do I need an RPG Maker for the future fan translation of the game?

Yeah, it is possible to make a VN-like game, but you are limited in the most basic features like 'skip seen text' or 'go back'. But thanks to the community plugins, I managed to implement stuff like 'hide ui' or 'message log' so in the end it's not that bad.

There's two reasons why I decided to stick with the engine: 1) I already own my copy and 2) I knew this engine for a very long time, so I didn't have to learn anything new - I could just jump in and start to make a game without any issues.

As for the fan translation - no, you don't need to own your copy of RPG Maker - all the text from the game is stored in an external file that can be edit in 'notepad++' or a similar program.

I'm absolutely loving the story! And I love Angus, Rowley and Kegar so much! I'm so looking forward to the next update ^ω^

Hello! Thank you for playing the game and for your kind words - I'm absolutely overjoyed to hear that you like both the characters and the story.

Hi again, I would like to ask one more question: will there be a FAQ? Just suddenly people will ask the same questions)

YES, omg, I totally forgot about making a new FAQ on the project page - thank you for reminding me about it. If you have any other questions realted to the project, please write them down here - I'll answer shortly.

(1 edit)

I'm probably stupid, but I can't find the FAQ. I've already searched everywhere but I couldn't find it. Can you give a link to the project page?

Thank you in advance

Edit: I found the FAQ, but it still doesn't exist)

Oh, no no - the FAQ page is still under construction and it's gonna be posted here: https://afteryears.wordpress.com/faq/ I just said, that you reminded that I still need to update it, and at the same time I asked you if you have some other questions related to the game (apart from the fan-translation matter you mention before). Sorry for the confusion.

I loved the game, and his art is very well made and cute and Rowley ended up being my favorite because he is the kind of guy I like with a rough and stout appearance, I adore a lot and I am looking forward to the next updates. 😻✨🌈

Hello HidWold! Thank you for playing the game and writing the comment - I'm delighted to hear that you enjoy my work.

And if you like Rowley, then definitely stay tuned for the upcoming public update! ;)

When I play the game sometimes and I tap the screen to get to the next scene the screen goes black and brings me back to the main menu

Hello. Thank you for contacting me in regard to this issue.

- Does the problem you described is related to the Android version or PC/Desktop?

- [if Android] When the screen goes black and returns to the main menu - does it shows the artwork of the characters? (like the first time when you boot the game?)

Yes it is the Android version and it does show artwork of the main characters with the start button it's happened only a couple times but it's a bit irritating when I have to go through things I've already done when I forget to save

Thank you for the reply. I'm still unsure what might be the problem. If I may ask, what exact phone model do you use?

Hello, Tyrving! I would like to ask one question: Will there be other languages in the game? I understand that you don't develop the game every day, that it's just your hobby(for now), but you can let your fans translate it into another language

You can, for example, upload a file with dialogs to Twitter, and then people will have to translate English into any other language. Then you will be given an edited file and you will put it in the game (why did you read it if it is nonsense?)
I would like to see a Russian in the game
(Sorry if there are errors in the text. I repeat, I am from Russia)

Heya, Walter. Yes, it is possible, and I would love to see the game being translated to the other languages, however right now, with the script still being under construction, it will be a difficult task to both implement and follow all the changes. It is a thing on my 'to do' list, but I can't promise it will be coming soon. Thank you for your comment! Cheers from Poland.

(1 edit)

Okay, I'll wait. I immediately had two questions(also related with translation):

1. The game will be able to translate only your patrons?
2. Can I translate through my phone? Yes, I have an ancient laptop, but I rarely use it
If you need translators in the future, write then, I will be happy to help(it will be sad if I can't translate throught phone...)
Also do a FAQ so that less questions are asked (◔‿◔)
(sorry if I ask too many questions ಥ‿ಥ)

I love the game so far good job ❤❤

Hello. I'm pleased to hear it. Thank you for playing the game!

Good game. Slightly surreal while listening to "Put your head on my shoulder" at times, but good.

(+2)

Hello! Thank you for playing the game. I would be happy to hear your opinion on that matter. Was there another scene/dialogue line that felt out of place to you? And why do you think these didn't feel genuine?

NONONONO Sorry, I didn't mean it like that!!!!

Sorry, I've wrote this when it was around 3am for me, stressing about work, not sleeping and vibing a big mood, like you do! No scene felt out of place or ingenuine, but I wrote this at the locker scene or the hot tub scene, I think, linking the scene and the song in a way that gave 3am me a moment. I did like the game and felt pretty involved in it too. Great job and I can't wait to see the next installment.

(+1)

I see. I'm glad to hear it, then. Thank you for writing back, I really appreciate it!

(+1)

hey i really enjoyed the new update!! but also when is the next update going to come out

(+1)

Hello again! I'm happy to hear you like the new content! As for the next public update, I can't say for sure, but I will be aiming for a release sometime by the end of next month (hopefully).

Uh... were this build and the previous build written by completely different people? They are... not similar at all. It's like a totally different game. And I'm *really* confused by being able to skip sections in a nonlinear game, but then again, the second part is... entirely linear, which is the most significant difference I'm noticing, but the entire writing style feels different.

(1 edit) (+1)

Hey MarloweC! The difference in the writing style is the result of my extended break from the game development - it's been about 2 years between these updates and my english language vocabulary is a bit wider now.

did the next update come out yet or is it going to come out tomorrow?

Hello, zackyp. The game just got updated. I hope you will enjoy the new content.
